sony ericsson launches walkman wi-fi cellphone
London (UK) - Launched today in conjunction with the MTV Europe Music Awards, Sony Ericsson has announced the W705 Walkman phone and the Wireless Home Audio System MBS-900. Both are expected to make an appearance on store shelves in the first quarter of 2009.
The Sony Ericsson phones that sport the “Walkman” tag are primarily looking to attract those who want their phones to play music. Wi-Fi isn’t necessarily a common feature in cellphones yet and especially not in music phones, if we forget the iPhone for a moment. But considering the fact that music downloads are usually substantial, Wi-Fi connectivity makes sense and could turn the W705 into an attractive product.
Sony Ericsson is marketing the built in Wi-Fi as a way for users “to go online for the best songs or most popular YouTube video clips.” Also, the company promises that the W705 “features the same superior sound quality as the W980 Walkman phone […].”
The W705 also comes with the ability to shake the phone to control the volume, a 2.4” screen, a 3.2 megapixel camera and a 4 GB memory card. The phone integrates Bluetooth, which, according to Sony Ericsson, can stream music straight to the MBS-900 audio system. The MBS-900 includes a radio and can switch to mute when a phone call comes through to the mobile phone.
The MBS-900 isn’t totally reliant upon the Walkman either, with a 3.5mm line-in that allows consumers you to use it as a speaker set up for a computer. However, apart from the neat connectivity with its sister product, it seems a very limiting product that is going to be entirely dependent upon W705 sales.
Pricing has not been announced
