ALCOHOLISM (Alcohol dependence)
Alcoholism is a disease that includes the four symptoms
· Craving--A strong need, or urge, to drink
· Loss of control--Not being able to stop drinking once drinking has begun
· Physical dependence--Withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety after stopping drinking
· Tolerance--The need to drink greater amounts of alcohol to get "high"
CAUSES OF ALCOHOLISM
· Mental and emotional stress
· Social and cultural pressures
· Family history of alcohol
SIGNS OF ALCOHOLISM
PHYSICAL SIGNS
· While intoxicated: slurred speech, dizziness, clumsiness or unsteadiness
· Blackouts
· Weight loss
· Unexplained sore or upset stomach
· Redness in the face or cheeks
· Numbness or tingling in hands and feet
MENTAL SIGNS
· Unable to control drinking
· Drinking leads to dangerous situations like driving drunk, walking in an unsafe area
· Increased irritability, agitation and anger
· Avoiding activities that do not involve the opportunity to drink
· Excessive weeping and emotional displays
· Unexplained absences and sick days from work
· Oversleeping or difficulty sleeping

REGULAR drinking is good for you--aids the digestion as well as raising the spirits. This is commonplace folk wisdom in Britain, France, Poland, Japan, MNicaragua, Antigua, and Australia--indeed, in most places in the world except America. So it was pleasing to see the American Council on Science and Health this month finally endorse moderate drinking by publishing a pamphlet, by R. Curtis Ellison of the Boston University School of Medicine, that says: "The scientific evidence is now clear. alcohol use can extend life"
