Apples ...

Three people picked 65 apples altogether. At the first tree they each picked the same number of apples. At the second tree they each picked 3 times as many as they picked at the first tree. When they finished at the third tree, the group had 5 times as many apples as they had when they started at that tree. At the fourth tree the group picked just 5 apples.

How many apples did each person pick at the first tree?

Each one picked one apple at the first tree - - if number of apples picked at first tree is x , then total picked at that tree is 3x. Second tree is thrice the number so 3x x 3 = 9x. Hence at two trees picked total is 9x + 3x which is 12x. After third tree picking total is 5 times of start at that tree so 12x x 5 which is 60x. And last tree yielded 5 apples so 60x + 5 is 65 making x as 1 which is number of apples picked at first tree Smile
