Except for insulin, a diabetic's weakest link is the foot. Nerve damage from diabetes lessens sensation of pain, so diabetics may not realise when their feet are injured. . Blood vessel damage means injuries or infections dont heal like they should - a little sore can become gangrenous leading to amputation. And doctors say that once you lose one leg due to diabetes there's a 75% of losing the other leg within the next 3 years. . As a diabetic you've to develop foot consciousness. . This is how you can keep your feet doing what they should : 1) TAKE THE LOAD OFF YOUR FEET. . lose weight to avoid your feet from bearing your heavy weight 2) BECOME A FOOT INSPECTOR. . inspect your feet two or three times daily making sure there is no redness, bruises, cuts, blisters, cracks, heat, swelling or infection. 3) KEEP THEM CLEAN. . wash your feet well with mild soap n pat them dry. 4) KEEP THEM DRY. . use a good foot powder between toes, and change socks frequently. 5) KEEP THEM WELL-MAINTAINED. . keep toe-nails short n cut straight, treating athlete's foot n other minor probs promptly. Never go barefoot. Buff your calluses with a pumice stone. Dont soak your feet for prolonged periods. 6) KEEP THEM WARM ON COLD DAYS. . but dont use a hot-water bottle or heating-pad cuz they can burn you without u knowing it. 7) WEAR WELL-FITTING SHOES. . running shoes are best for diabetic people Cool DONT FORGET SOCKS. . it's best to wear socks with thick, cushioned heel n toe pads that will protect the feet before wearing shoes.
